Avatarrandom rantings and rabid retorts of a socially-retarded, decidedly high-strung, renewed romantic

music and madness II

After silence, that which comes nearest to expressing the inexpressible is music.

Aldous Huxley

Music is the distillation of emotion. It is the parchment by which sentiment is laid, its lyrics the aphorisms of the history of the heart, and the melody and tune the embellishment of this narrative. To expound by way of music is as emotional as it is terse. Music is able to encompass, explain, embrace and empower the human condition into the medium of art. It unfolds with intent, and directs without restraint.

To tell a story by music is to borrow the poetry of another in the objective of sharing your own, claiming the song and the sound as representations of a moment in time, of a feeling, fleeting and transcendant, grounded by the notes and the words of the music. Often mere words fail to encapsulate the vastness of one's predicament. Music achieves this with brevity, sometimes levity, and always with precision.

Let me borrow once more the poetry of sound to tell the tale of the troubles and triumphs, trespasses and tribulations, timbre and tone, titillation and temptation of the year that was. These are the songs of my year - upbeat and uncompromising, angsty and arrogant, dynamic and dialectic, profound and perturbed. Written and performed by others, claimed and set to the story of my days.

a poetry in motion, i'd like to call it.

sometimes i think the songs these days are on the verge of stupidity [because they lack story/ies]. but it will contradict my belief that music is always genius.

hmmnnn.

@Désolé Boy That's a good one. Although personally I connote poetry in motion to dance, rather than music. True, some of the genres these days tend to verge on the asinine, but despite the apparent sell-out of some artists, there are still a lot that chose to be, well, artists. :)

I'm always searching for the perfect word or perfect sentence to accurately describe how I feel.I always fail. Now I know that it's because sometimes there are no words, or if there are I don't know the right ones to do justice to the complex human experience that need description. I suppose this is the point where either silence or music should take over.

I like your prose style - very lyrical...romantic...a little whimsical, too, I think, with all the alliteration..

Anyways, Happy New Year from Cebu!=)

In the taxonomy of words and un-words, poetry and music are closely associated with each other; while the first sets the visuals, the other provides the aural accompaniment. No wonder too that the most mellifluous of poetic pieces are the 'lyrical pieces' -- 'lyric' being operative word. On that note, I got to say, your prose sings as it soars....

@Sitting Pretty I remember a quote from Ansel Adams that fits your, our, predicament. It's in quotidian quote VI.

"When words become unclear, I shall focus with photographs. When images become inadequate, I shall be content with silence."

I was once compared to Oscar Wao, seeing that you've recently read that tome of a masterpiece. Painfully eloquent, awkward and esoteric to the uninitiated. Thank you for the generous compliment. I feel often that my style does not lend easily to comprehension, or accessibility.

Happy New Year too!

@A Fistful Of Moonbeams™ Wow. I am at a loss here. To receive such a compliment from someone as prolific, and brilliant, as yourself. Thank you. I can't imagine my prose to be anything as lithe and sublimely transcendant as you have described, but thanks. Please do take a look at some of my poetry, too. I would appreciate your professional input on how I may improve my craft.

Haha, omgosh, i just realized the similarity between you and oscar wao, you're right.

Hey, I like that Ansel Adams quote. I have some photos on my desktop from that roll of film some people found last year - the one they claimed was his, but nobody could prove it. The photos are beautiful either way. =)
